Medical Assistant Duties- What They Entail
What comprises medical assistant duties? Are you hiring or are you someone who wants to go into medical assisting? It is not really hard to imagine what to put into a medical assistant job description. Duties will vary depending on what area the medical assistant is working in.
Some examples of medical assistant duties include receiving patients at a clinic, administering injections, or even filing documents, among many others.
In a dental practice a medical assistant will prepare instruments needed for treatment like sterilizing and aid the dentist in the procedures. They also organize all client documentation and fix appointments.
In a pediatric practice they may give injections and do filing and handle the administrative duties. In other setting assistants may help doctors to make research on cases, and in big hospitals assistants handle most of the documentation.
In some settings medical assistants work in the lab. They may process blood samples or run tests to find out what might be wrong with the patients. There are some potential health risks in this kind of work and it is important not to get contaminated by the samples and follow all necessary safety procedures without exception.
If you do not wish to work in a hospital or be around sick people, then you may consider becoming a medical transcriptionist. This type of work can be done at home, and simply involves you typing out notes that doctors have made in audio form.
An ophthalmologist assistant helps with the taking of eye tests, instruct patients on contact lenses use and care and can also make dressings and give medications. They also take care of the equipment.
Medical assistants also help doctors to make research on diseases to make complex diagnoses. They can do library searches and also online research. They help doctors collect samples for investigation like draw blood and other samples.
Medical assistants are responsible for the smooth operation of a clinic or hospital, and this includes organizing patient information, managing appointments and caring for medical equipment. They also dispense medicine to patients and instruct them on the consumption of medicines.
If you get yourself certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants, you will have a better understanding of what is involved in being a medical assistant and be more likely to land a job. A good knowledge of medical assistant duties will make you prepared for what you can expect in your new job and will help you enjoy your position.
