How To Become A Medical Assistant
Anyone thinking about how to become a medical assistant needs to consider the many healthcare training opportunities available. Success as a medical assistant is greatly dependent on training.
Being a medical assistant is a popular choice for many people who want to earn a good salary while helping people to get well. It is not practically impossible to get a doctor assistant’s position without training as you can learn on the job but these chances are pretty rare.
To get good training you should find a program sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants. This could be an online or correspondent program, or one at a recognized college.
Learning online is not for everyone as there will a lack of a practical setting to observe the tasks being taught though it is not impossible to learn online. It may be ideal for people already working in a medical setting. Previous volunteer work in hospitals may be very useful in this regard.
Medical assistant training usually lasts for a year, and includes the following areas of study: anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, record-keeping, terminology, accounting, typing, and even insurance processing.
Other important areas of study include medical law and medical administration. You will need to understand proper relations with patients. The principles of pharmacy are another important part of your education. Most programs end with an internship and of course a final exam.
There are a variety of medical assistant jobs and you can choose from radiology assistant, emergency medical technician, physician assistant, physical therapy assistant, medical examiner assistant and so on.
The American Association of Medical Assistants is the most recognized body of certification for medical assistants. While there are other certification bodies, they are not as well regarded as the AAMA. Being certified by the AAMA will tell employers that you are competent and reliable and will thus increase your employability.
Medical assistants are expected to enjoy a more than 35% growth in employment opportunities as compared to other occupations. Greater experience and continued training will allow you to pursue other career paths in medicine, and you can even choose to be trained as a clinical officer or specialize in a particular field.
Medical assistants are a very important part of the medical field because without them doctors would be overworked and would have little time to dedicate to managing the health of their clients. They have to do research to help them in diagnosis and sometime have to travel to more than one place to see patients. Without medical assistants this would not be possible.
